The diner tradition is traced to Walter Scott. A part-time pressman, he sold sandwiches to fellow newspaper workers to earn extra money. By 1872, his sideline was so lucrative, he quit his job and sold food from a covered express wagon parked outside the newspaper offices.

Hamburgers are one of the most popular items on the diner’s menu. Who invented the hamburger? Food experts believe the first hamburger on a bun was served in 1900 at Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, CT.
The first diner, created in 1872, had a “walk up” window located on either side of a horse-drawn wagon. The menu consisted of hot sandwiches and coffee but quickly moved to other fare and newer, late-night customers.
